THE PROJECT

DIVERSIFAIR is a pioneering three-year Erasmus+ project (2023-2026) that promotes intersectional fairness in and for AI systems. Our mission is to make AI fairer and more inclusive by developing educational resources for both technical and non-technical audiences.

DIVERSIFAIR’s official information sheet can be found on the Erasmus+ project results platform.

Shaping education for fairer AI use: DIVERSIFAIR, a European initiative

INTERSECTIONAL FAIRNESS
IN THE CONTEXT OF AI SYSTEMS

Intersectional fairness in AI is a holistic framework to understand and address the harms experienced by individuals due to the intersecting and often marginalised aspects of their identity. These harms, often based on compounding AI biases, lead to disproportionate disadvantages in AI-driven decisions.

HOW DIVERSIFAIR ADDRESSES INTERSECTIONAL FAIRNESS AND BIAS IN AI

DIVERSIFAIR Diversify with Intersectionally FAIRer AI is a European initiative uniting eight partner organisations to promote fairness in AI.
We recognise that discrimination is rarely based on just one characteristic—race, gender, disability, and other factors intersect in complex ways. That’s why DIVERSIFAIR moves beyond traditional fairness and bias-mitigation approaches that focus on single categories, ensuring instead AI systems are inclusive for all.

Mixed group of diverse people

Our key activities at DIVERSIFAIR include:

  • AI practice audits: Assessing bias risks in AI development and deployment
  • AI Harms Typology: Classifying different types of AI-related discrimination
  • Intersectional Data Science Education: Training AI professionals in inclusive data science practices
  • Actionable Recommendations: Providing guidelines for developers, policymakers, and organisations
  • Awareness Training: Equipping both technical and non-technical audiences with knowledge to advocate for fair AI

PROMOTING INTERSECTIONAL FAIRNESS IN AI

At DIVERSIFAIR, we centre the experiences of those often marginalised by AI-driven decisions. Our project highlights case studies and best practices to develop solutions that align with the EU’s values of equality and inclusion. By working together, we can help ensure AI is used in ways that better serves diverse communities.
